The central application system (CAS) portal will open on July 1, 2023. These dates are also for fellowships not using CAS.  Important dates are as follows.

• Applicant registration opens: Wednesday, June 30, 2023
• CAS Target Date: Wednesday, August 23, 2023
• Program and Applicant Rank list due: Monday, December 5, 2023
• Match Results Announced: Monday, December 12, 2023
• Post-match Vacancies: Tuesday, December 13, 2023
• Training to begin: July 2024

Programs are strongly encouraged to start on July 8, 2024 to allow fellows to complete their residency, ending June 30, 2024.

Fellowship directors are strongly encouraged to coordinate start dates with the incoming fellow(s)’ Residency Program Director.
 

We have passed the halfway point for the 2018-2019 academic year. Fellows should be fully engaged in their program and learning process. This is a good time to review compliance requirements and if necessary, make adjustments. Be sure that your program is achieving its goals in fellow education.

Each year, the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology, Fellowship Compliance Committee (AUPO FCC) collects an exit survey from fellows who finished their training at participating programs. We recently updated the reports online to include the 2018 data based on the exit surveys for selected subspecialties.

Are your fellows regularly updating their procedure logs?  All fellows should have their username and password and have already accessed their log for entering surgeries, procedures or cases. Fellowship Directors can login to the online system and view documentation entered by fellows. We encourage you to view these logs throughout the year to check your fellow’s progress and to be sure your program is complying with your subspecialty program requirements.

A total of 44 programs among 7 subspecialties were reviewed during the 2018 triennial/quadrennial period. Several programs across multiple subspecialties are being monitored for various compliance matters.

313 fellow exit surveys among 7 subspecialties were collected in June and July for review. There were 65 programs that were sent letters for clarification and several programs are being closely monitored.

With just a couple of months left in the 2017/2018 academic year, fellows should be fully engaged in your program and their learning process. This is a good time to review compliance requirements, to make adjustments, and to check that your program is achieving its goals related to fellow education.

Remind your fellows the deadline to complete exit surveys is the last day of their fellowship program between June 30 and July 7. If your fellow will stay past June 30, please email AUPO FCC Staff at aupofcc@aao.org to let us know. All 3 parts of the survey will need to be complete in order for the fellow to submit. Fellow Exit Survey answers are anonymous; programs may only view the Case Log section after it has been submitted.
