Neuro-Ophthalmology

Information for fellows interested in neuro-ophthalmology

Neuro-ophthalmologists take care of visual problems that are related to the nervous system; that is, visual problems that do not necessarily arise from the eyes themselves. More than half of the brain is involved in some way with vision-related activities, including the afferent (sight) and efferent (moving the eyes) pathways. Neuro-ophthalmology is a subspecialty of both Neurology and Ophthalmology and fellowship applicants come to our subspecialty through either or both residency routes. Neuro-ophthalmology fellowship provides additional specialized training and expertise in problems of the eye, brain, nerves and muscles. Neuro-ophthalmology fellowship through AUPO FCC requires that the applicant complete at least 1 year of internship and 3 years of clinical training in either Neurology or Ophthalmology residency.

Common conditions seen by neuro-ophthalmologists include: optic nerve problems (such as optic neuritis and ischemic optic neuropathy), visual field loss, unexplained visual loss, transient visual loss, visual disturbances, double vision, abnormal eye movements, thyroid eye disease, myasthenia gravis, unequal pupil size, and eyelid abnormalities.

The AUPO FCC is committed to the establishment and maintenance of standards for subspecialty fellowship training in ophthalmology.  Fellowship programs in Neuro-ophthalmology provide advanced level training in the diagnosis and management of medical and surgical disorders affecting the afferent and efferent visual pathways as well as other systemic and neurologic disorders affecting the visual system.  NANOS is proud to support and endorse the fellowship training compliance program of the AUPO FCC. Representatives of NANOS established and maintain the initial and current training guidelines for the neuro-ophthalmology fellowship programs. These requirements serve as the basis upon which the AUPO FCC evaluates fellowship programs for compliance.  Ultimately, it is the intention of the compliance process to assure that fellows complete their fellowship program with competent training in preparation for providing safe and excellent care for our patients with neuro-ophthalmic disease. The AUPO FCC process is designed to protect the integrity of our fellowship training process and to protect the fellow along with fellowship applicants.

NANOS remains currently active and involved in the AUPO FCC process.  The subspecialty managers of the AUPO FCC are appointed by NANOS and any changes in the training guidelines must be approved and endorsed by NANOS as a means of assuring continued support for the AUPO FCC compliance process.
