Cornea Requirement Changes

The Educational Committee of the Cornea Society presented a draft of new Cornea Fellowship Guidelines at the Cornea Fellowship Director's Breakfast immediately
preceding the Cornea Society / EBAA Fall Educational Symposium in November, 2015. Periodic revisions of the guidelines are performed every several years to maintain
currency with clinical and surgical advancements in Cornea practice and training.

The most significant change is the addition of endothelial keratoplasty to surgical training requirements keratoplasty minimums which will be 10 endothelial keratoplasties and
15 penetrating keratoplasties during their training as primary surgeon. There was a recognition of the need for these changes and wide support for their implementation.
It was also acknowledged that there would likely be an increase in the minimum number of required cases for each category in the future.

Other additions include exposure to and management of ocular surface tumors and additional fellowship directors requirements. These new requirements will need to be met for candidates matching in 2016 and beginning their fellowships in July of 2017. Fellowship Directors and
Cornea fellowship candidates are encouraged to visit the AUPO FCC website to view the new guidelines and to
make plans to attend the Fellowship Breakfast this Fall.
