Glaucoma

Glaucoma specialists routinely treat patients with severe and/or complex glaucoma, which is frequently associated with other ocular and systemic conditions.  Many excellent glaucoma fellowships are available to provide additional exposure to the clinical and surgical management of glaucoma beyond what is obtained during residency.  The Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology Fellowship Compliance Committee (AUPO FCC) is a professional organization committed to the establishment and maintenance of uniform standards for fellowship training to protect the public, institutions, and trainees.  The standards for subspecialty training in glaucoma were developed by the American Glaucoma Society (AGS), and these requirements serve as the basis by which the AUPO FCC evaluates fellowship programs for compliance.  The AGS is comprised of glaucoma specialists who have completed fellowship training in glaucoma, and its mission is to provide excellence in the care of patients with glaucoma through education and research.  The AGS remains actively engaged with the AUPO FCC.  The AGS appoints subspecialty representatives to serve on the AUPO FCC.  The guidelines for fellowship education in glaucoma are periodically reviewed by the AGS Education and Communication Committee, and suggestions for revision are made to the AUPO FCC.  The AGS acknowledges the importance of completing training within an AUPO FCC compliant fellowship, and this is a requirement for membership in the AGS.
